Banners for Causes Real and Imagined
I grew up fascinated by the at handmade banners and pennants I saw on military bases, in gymnasiums and at church. They're proof that someone gave a damn: spent hours cutting, stitching, sometimes quilting entire panels emblazoned with the symbols of war, sports and religion. Later in university and as an activist I made countless signs and banners with decidledly different purposes.
My banners join a messy, radical lineage: union organizers, AIDS activists, water protectors, anyone who ever held up fabric to power and said "no."
I'm blending these disparate influences into the banners I make. Sometimes they're for actual protests. Sometimes they're for movements that only exist in my imagination.
